The Hocking College School of Health and Nursing will be promoting wellness during their eleventh annual Health Fair on March 1, 2011 in the Student Center Multiplex from 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.
The public is invited as participants can visit 45 booths, each demonstrating simple adjustments in everyday habits that can lead to healthier lifestyles. Instructors Bev Kubachka and Tammy Keith said the event is planned, researched and organized by students in the Nursing, Physical Therapy Assistance, Medical Assistance, Fitness Management, Opticianry and Culinary and Dietary Management programs.
“Students are encouraged to develop new methods to engage the public in wellness and prevention, and the health fair provides an excellent opportunity to reach a large number of people to provide an important public service,” the instructors said.
Most services are free, except cholesterol checks for $10. Students will measure blood sugar and blood pressure, target heart rate/flexibility, body fat ratios and stress levels. Information supporting the relationship of cold prevention and hand washing, smokeless tobacco and smoking cessation, drug and alcohol abuse, energy drinks, emotional care, depression and suicide, sexually transmitted disease, rape trauma and healthy diets will also be presented.
“New this year, students will offer information on the health considerations of tattoos, and using the Wii gaming program in rehabilitation.” Kubachka said.
The Hocking College Dietetic Club will also host a booth, with a focus on their annual theme, “Nutrition on a Mission.” Throughout the year, the club is offering demonstrations to teach students to make healthy eating choices. At the Health Fair, students from the club will discuss healthy eating on a budget, and share nutritional fruit smoothies with the attendees.
“The Dietetic Club won a $500 STARS Grant from Hocking College in the fall quarter, the Most Positive Impact on Campus award, which is helping to share the message throughout the campus community of the importance of healthy eating,” Donna Wamsley, Culinary and Dietary Management lead instructor, said. Students and attendees can get recipes and additional information on the Dietetic Club “Nutrition on a Mission” Facebook page.
Healthy snacks and water can be purchased at the event. A book sale will also take place, along with raffles throughout the day, both with proceeds benefitting the skills labs. Limited free parking will be offered to visitors in front of the Hocking College Student Center.
