Adolphus (Al) L. Matthews joins Hocking College as the new Director of Campus Safety and Chief of the Hocking College Police Department.

Matthews was previously with the Perkins Township Police Department, in Sandusky, Ohio, for 17 years. His career with the Perkins Township Police began first as a Patrol Officer then, after many promotions, eventually rising to the rank of Executive Lieutenant in 2002.  His responsibilities included overseeing the entire 40-member department, consisting of communications, records, investigations, patrol, narcotics and joint task force involvement.

Also a Deputy U.S. Marshal since 2005, Matthews has collaborated with law enforcement efforts of the U.S. Marshal’s Office, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), NASA and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).  Prior to his tenure at Perkins, Matthews was an investigator for the Ohio Department of Liquor Control, and with the Sandusky Police Department and Erie County Sheriff’s Office.  

Matthews’ career in law enforcement actually began at Hocking College in 1984. “I have always loved this area, and coming back to Hocking College is like a homecoming. I look forward to joining the highly regarded Hocking College Police Department,” Matthews said.  He brings a strong belief in community policing, frequent and diverse training, and a positive attitude about communicating with the public.

The new chief was one of only 250 police officer graduates of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia in 2005.  He has also been trained by the Ohio Department of Homeland Security, and has several certifications in the National Incident Management System. Matthews has an Associate of Applied Science/Law Enforcement – Police Science from Terra Community College in Fremont, Ohio.
