The Hocking College Youth Tutoring Program celebrated the completion of one thousand hours of tutoring in local schools and after-school programs this month.
The Hocking College service-learning program expanded this school year, thanks to an innovative collaboration between the college and Ohio Campus Compact, a statewide non-profit coalition of 47 college and university presidents and their campuses working to promote and develop the civic purposes of higher education.
Since the beginning of the school year, 28 Hocking College students have been trained as tutors and placed at seven local elementary schools and four after-school program sites. These college students have provided tutoring to elementary school students on reading and math skills fundamental to their ability to succeed at school.
“The tutors are working one-on-one and in small groups with our students. We have seen our students stay on task longer, be neater with their work, work more independently and with increased self-esteem, and score higher on tests. This program has been a huge benefit to our children and building,” Lindy Douglas, Assistant Principal at Nelsonville-York Elementary, said. Twelve tutors from the program have been placed in Nelsonville-York Elementary this school year.
The Hocking College Youth Tutoring Program is a service-learning program for Hocking College students, which trains students as youth tutors and places them in local elementary schools and after-school programs, at no cost to the community. The program was originally developed by Suzanne Brooks-Korner, Coordinator of the Hocking College Community Outreach Center, and has been expanded this school year by Ben Hastil, an AmeriCorps VISTA with Ohio Campus Compact.
“I have really enjoyed participating in the program. Seeing that I have helped a student, even in a small way, is a very rewarding experience,” Stephanie Ely, a second-year Hocking College student who is a tutor in the program, said.
